University
The UNNC Global Office provides scholarships for exchange students. An application is required for these. The award money can be used to pay for a trip or leisure activities in the country. More information at Scholarships for non-degree students at UNNC..
“Wǒ yào qù Nuòdīnghàn Dàxué” (我要去诺丁汉大学) – “I want to go to the University of Nottingham!” Students of all creeds and colours are welcomed at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), currently from more than 70 countries. All of the programmes are held in English at the high level of the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, to which UNNC belongs. According to the QS World University Ranking 2013, it is among the top 1% of universities worldwide. While lectures take place in large groups, tutorials are held with a maximum of 20 students in order to facilitate discussion and interaction. The International Office organises a transfer to collect all exchange students from the airport in Ningbo or Shanghai. This is followed by a welcome programme with various events for getting to know each other and preparing for the semester in Ningbo, for example by opening a bank account or being assigned a local “buddy” and a tutor. Every month, activities are on offer for the international students, but also for those in the first semester. Chinese language courses are also available free of charge. With over 500 international students, almost 10% of all those attending UNNC, the university boasts a global flair and facilitates many friendships.
City
Ningbo is one of China’s oldest cities, with the world’s second-oldest port. It is situated on China’s east coast in the Province of Zhèjiāng, approximately 2.5 hours from Shanghai. The five million inhabitants enjoy the subtropical monsoon climate with its annual average temperature of 16.4°C. Forbes magazine ranked Ningbo at number 7 on the list of the world’s best business cities. Imports and exports are one of the city’s main industries, and the city is a unique mix of modern skyscrapers and traditional architecture with impressive parks. You can feel at home in the midst of the international shopping centres, restaurants, nightclubs and bars, and you can attend sporting or music events, visit temples or stroll through the complex streets and enjoy the culture and tradition in the roughly 100 museums as well as the local festivals.
Accommodation
All exchange students can find accommodation in student halls belonging to the university. All of the single rooms are furnished, have air conditioning, a telephone, a TV and a bathroom. You share the kitchen with the other students living on your corridor. There are also four-room apartments with two toilets, a shower and a common room. Country
The People’s Republic of China with its more than 1.3 billion inhabitants has a history stretching back 5,000 years, during which wonderful landscapes, a fascinating cultural heritage, excellent dishes and impressive cities came into being. It is the third-largest country in the world and is shaped like a rooster. It is the state of festivities, porcelain and silk. This is where paper production and printing was discovered, where the compass and gunpowder as well as the seismograph, abacus, steel, the umbrella and the toothbrush were invented. The friendly and warm Chinese, whose national animal is the giant panda, are characterised by a high level of hospitality. The four main religions are Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism alongside Christianity. If you travel to China, you should visit the Great Wall of China, the ancient water towns, the Temple of Heaven and the Silk Road.
