HSBA is proud of its modern and future-oriented teaching and research. The topics of responsibility, sustainability and digitalisation are anchored in the curricula of our undergraduate and graduate programmes. Teaching takes place at our new campus at Willy-Brandt-Strasse 75, which boasts modern facilities and offers students, faculty and staff an ideal learning and working environment.

The challenges of digitalisation are being intensively addressed at HSBA. The university partners with students and companies as a competent partner in academia, research and further education. The wider topic of digitalisation encompasses all areas of the university and is incorporated into the curricula of all undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. In the long term, HSBA focusses on a meaningful combination of classroom and online teaching.

Internationality is important to us. As an internationally focused university, we cooperate with a large number of worldwide partner universities and enable our students to spend part of their studies abroad. At the same time, we offer internationally oriented and (partly) English-language degree programmes for students from all over the world. Our campus' international atmosphere is created by faculty and students from many different nations.

The undergraduate "dual" co-op degree programmes combine theory with practice. Students acquire the theoretical content of their studies in the classroom at HSBA and apply their knowledge in a targeted manner in their partner company. In turn, real-life business issues are incorporated into the lectures. Professors and doctoral students conduct research at the interface between science and business and include their findings in their teaching. In so doing, our students are well prepared for the time after their studies when they fully commence their professional careers. Up to 90 percent of undergraduates receive a job offer from their cooperation company directly after graduation.

HSBA offers teaching and research at an outstanding academic level. Our degree programmes are high-quality and internationally recognised Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts or Master of Science degrees accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) and the Foundation of International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA). The research results of our professors and doctoral students make a valuable contribution to theory and practice and are regularly published in internationally renowned journals.

The Honourable Association of Hamburg Merchants (Versammlung Eines Ehrbaren Kaufmanns zu Hamburg (VEEK)), Germany's largest value-oriented association, is one of our shareholders and supports the postgraduate mentoring programme. When developing our degree programmes, we are guided by the model of the honourable businessman, who is economically successful and at the same time assumes social responsibility. Referring to these guiding principles, our students are trained to act in a responsible and sustainable manner.

Together with our partners from science and industry, we continuously develop our university, our degree programmes and continuing education programmes. We support our cooperating companies in recruiting outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students and are a reliable partner for continuing education and research.

HSBA is open-minded and modern. With numerous international partnerships among higher education institutions, we promote intercultural exchange in science, business and society. Further, we are committed to equal opportunities for students and employees. In 2018, HSBA signed the Diversity Charter.

HSBA is state-recognised and has been institutionally (re)accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat). In addition, it was awarded institutional accreditation by the Foundation of International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA) in 2018, which enables it to independently and flexibly develop further current as well as new degree programmes. All degrees are designed as high-quality and internationally recognised Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts or Master of Science degree programmes. In rankings by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE), HSBA performs above average.

Our students are involved in numerous committees and initiatives that go further than their academic studies. Their engagement actively contributes to shaping the development of the university. In addition to HSBA's unique music band, there are various committees that support social, cultural, political, athletic and internal university issues. In 2019, students founded a podcast as part of the first HSBA Hackathon. The students' extraordinary commitment, joint excursions, great sportsmanship and, last but not least, a lot of laughs result in a lively and inspiring atmosphere and characterise the HSBA spirit.

A personal and familiar atmosphere enables a direct and intensive exchange between professors, lecturers, administration staff and students. Therefore, students study in small groups. The departments Service Office, Programme Management, Relationship Management and Recruitment look after our students, prospective students and companies in an individual manner and offer tailor-made advice. Joint events, excursions and extracurricular activities add to the family atmosphere at HSBA.

HSBA was founded in 2004 by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce as the university of the Hamburg business community. Today, together with 300 cooperating companies, we offer dual (combining study and work) and part-time undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Our most important advisory body is the Board of Trustees, which consists of high-ranking company representatives who are committed to and support our university. The Honourable Association of Hamburg Merchants (Versammlung Ehrbarer Kaufleute zu Hamburg (VEEK)) and the HSBA Alumni Association hold shares in HSBA. The HSBA Friends and Sponsors Association supports us in numerous academic and student projects.

Our HSBA-Community is based on mutual respect, trust and appreciation for every individual and the institution itself. Our ethical belief is deeply anchored in the values of the „honourable merchant“ which can be found throughout our degree programmes and our daily work. HSBA’s students, teaching staff, partner company representatives, administrative staff, alumni, friends and patrons are strongly committed to the university and thereby contributing to HSBA’s unique spirit, a community that goes further than just academic study.

State Recognition

On 4 August 2009, the Behörde für Wissenschaft und Forschung der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg (Hamburg authorities for science and research) granted permanent state recognition to HSBA.

The Science Senator at the time, Dr. Herlind Gundelach, said: “I congratulate HSBA and its founder, Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, on obtaining permanent recognition. The accreditation successfully granted by the German Council of Science and Humanities is a seal of quality for top-notch teaching and high quality research achievements. With its dual courses of study tailored to Hamburg’s economy, HSBA fulfils an important function in our university landscape.”

Accreditation by the German Council of Science and Humanities

HSBA was accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities for the first time in 2009 and was reaccredited for a further five years in 2013 and 2019. The German Council of Science and Humanities is one of the most important advisory committees on academic policy in Germany and is funded by the Federal Government and the governments of the sixteen German states. It advises the federal and state governments in Germany on all matters involving the content-related and structural development of science, research and academia. Accreditation by the German Council of Science and Humanities is generally a prerequisite for universities in order to obtain permanent state recognition.
