The HSBA Model United Nations committee participate in several Model United Nations (MUN), both in Germany as well as abroad.
A MUN is a simulation of the United Nations, organised by students, for students. The participants form groups to represent a chosen country in the different committees (such as World Bank, UNESCO, etc). Within these committees, the goal of each delegate is to diplomatically enforce the interest of the own country, concerning a current political issue predefined by the organisers. The sessions aim at passing a joint resolution which include the concrete solutions and duties upon which the participating countries have agreed. The official language during the conference is English.
International cooperation and a willingness to compromise are key to success at a MUN. The chances of your own draft resolution being passed are extremely small without the support of the majority of participating countries. Therefore, diplomacy, knowledge and an understanding of different cultures as well as communication skills play a vital role. A MUN offers a unique opportunity to further develop one‘s negotiation and mediation skills.
The examination of various cultural, social and political backgrounds broadens your view on different international issues and disputes, as well as on the many opportunities which are provided in a more and more globalizing world.
Together we prepare for the topics of the committees and practice writing resolutions to be able to participate successfully at a MUN.
During a MUN you get to know students from all over the world and together we experience an exciting time in the committee sessions as well as at the evening events. For everyone a MUN is a very personal experience which leaves you with impressions you will never forget.
A special highlight is the annual Harvard World Model United Nations which has been taking place for over 20 years in changing significant metropolises of the world. In the past few years, the host cities have been Melbourne, Singapore and Brussels, among others.
