Applied Economics

Research Profile & Focus

Companies operate in a changing macroeconomic environment and specific regulatory and institutional frameworks. For the students at HSBA - to mediate in accordance with the dual philosophy, a "theory of practice" - it is therefore essential to understand relationships and processes in markets, the effects of economic policy and the macroeconomic and global economic developments and apply them to their respective companies.

Tthe Department of Applied Economics follows this direction by focussing in teaching as well as in research on the reciprocal transfer between theory and practice, and the exchange between science and practice. The Department is an institution and attached to the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI), which supports HSBA's dual approach through its basic research, doctoral training and studies.

HSBA students are strongly invited to actively participate in the various activities of the Department. For example, a team of HSBA students participated at the Postbank Finance Award 2011 with a thesis on "Game theoretical analysis of the euro crisis" and - among nationwide more than 50 submissions  - came up to 4th place, which was endowed with a prize money of 7,500 Euro.
