The Shanghai Jioa Tong University (SJTU), founded in 1896, is a renowned research university in China, which has produced many well-known mathematicians, rocket scientists and inventors. As one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country, it is part of the “C9 League”, an alliance formed between nine of China’s elite universities (similar to the “Ivy League” in the USA) which strive to improve education and research in the country. The SJTU also established the “Shanghai Rating”, one of the of the most cited university ratings in the world. Run by the Ministry of Education, the SJTU has over 45 000 students on its register, offering 64 Bachelor degrees and 56 Master Programmes, ranging from economics and business to medicine, art, engineering and agriculture. Aspiring PhD students can also obtain their doctorate in over 38 disciplines.
