Shaping the Future Togehter: New Mission Statement for HSBA

Prof. Dr. Tim Goydke on the values and goals of HSBA

In recent weeks, representatives of the entire university community have held intensive discussions and created a new basis for future cooperation, a mission statement that provides clarity, orientation and strengthens the sense of belonging. We talked to Prof. Dr. Tim Goydke about why a mission statement is so important and what values HSBA stands for.

Why does a university need a mission statement?

A mission statement provides orientation and makes the institution's self-image visible. It defines values and goals and ensures that all members of the university are pulling in the same direction. Especially in a dynamically changing educational landscape, it also serves as a compass for strategic decisions and future developments. It also helps to communicate the positioning clearly and comprehensibly.

How did the HSBA develop its new mission statement? Who was involved?

The new HSBA mission statement was developed in an intensive, participatory process. This collaborative approach proved to be particularly valuable, as it allowed the different perspectives to be incorporated. Thanks to the commitment of everyone involved, we have a mission statement that is not only concise but also reflects the values and self-image of the entire university.

What characterises HSBA, what makes our university special?

HSBA is characterised by a particularly close interaction between students, lecturers, staff and partner companies. The exchange with partner companies enables a practice-oriented education, while the international environment and the cosmopolitan attitude prepare students to act holistically and globally. This special spirit makes the HSBA a university where students not only receive excellent professional training, but also learn to think entrepreneurially and take social responsibility. We have formulated it as follows in our mission statement:

  • Excellent: We integrate high-quality academic teaching with practice-oriented research to develop professionals and leaders who create lasting impact.
  • Entrepreneurial: In collaboration with our corporate partners, we promote initiative, innovation, and strategic thinking with a holistic approach.
  • Responsible: We cultivate an inclusive and supportive community that values respect, integrity, and ethical decision-making.
  • Open to the World: We embrace diversity and facilitate international exchange, equipping our graduates for success in a globalised world.

We look forward to bringing our values and mission to life together in teaching, research and university life and making them tangible for everyone.
