Prof. Dr Jan Ninnemann appointed to the Hamburg Senate's Climate Advisory Board

HSBA port and logistics expert Prof. Dr Jan Ninnemann has been appointed to the Hamburg Senate's Scientific Climate Advisory Board.

With effect from 1 January 2026, HSBA Professor Dr Jan Ninnemann, together with four other new members, was appointed to the Hamburg Climate Advisory Council by Katharina Fegebank, Senator for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture. Professor Ninnemann succeeds logistics expert Prof. Dr. Ing. Carlos Jahn, Head of the Institute of Maritime Logistics at Hamburg University of Technology, who was a member of the Climate Advisory Board until 2025.

“I am delighted to have been appointed to the Hamburg Climate Advisory Council and would like to thank the Senate for the confidence it has placed in me,” said Professor Ninnemann. “Following Hamburg’s decision on its future direction, the Climate Advisory Council has a particularly important role to play: supporting the achievement of ambitious climate targets while keeping the interests of Hamburg’s economy and port in view.

As a researcher with strong ties to the maritime economy, I see it as my responsibility to contribute well-founded and balanced perspectives. The Port of Hamburg and the city as a business location are facing profound transformation processes, and shaping these in a sustainable, future-proof and at the same time competitive way will be a major challenge.”

The Climate Advisory Council was established with the amendment to the Climate Protection Act 2020. As an independent scientific body, the Advisory Council advises the Senate on an honorary basis on the implementation of the Climate Protection Act and the Hamburg Climate Plan. It makes recommendations on the updates and interim reports of the Climate Plan and also acts as a source of inspiration by issuing statements on current climate policy issues. With the amendment of the Climate Protection Act following the referendum on 12 October 2025, it will also have the role of proposing measures to achieve targets if the permissible annual CO2 emissions are exceeded. www.klimabeirat.hamburg
