New TUM study: HSBA is Hamburg’s leading university for entrepreneurship

The HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration is one of the most successful higher education institutions for entrepreneurship in the German-speaking world. This is the conclusion reached by the latest Entrepreneurial Impact Study 2026 published by the Technical University of Munich. Relative to its size, the HSBA ranks among the top institutions in terms of start-ups, funding success and the economic impact of its founders.

HSBA is Hamburg’s leading university for entrepreneurship. This is once again demonstrated by the latest Entrepreneurial Impact Study 2026 from the Technical University of Munich, which examines the entrepreneurial success of 437 higher education institutions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Whilst large universities naturally dominate the absolute start-up figures, HSBA ranks among the top institutions when entrepreneurial success is measured in relation to the size of the institution.

The results are particularly impressive in the categories that reflect the sustainable success of entrepreneurial activities. HSBA ranks 12th in terms of start-ups per 1,000 students and 10th in terms of funded start-ups. In terms of the economic impact of its founders – measured by jobs created and capital raised – it even ranks among the leading higher education institutions across the entire DACH region.

The results underscore a profile that has characterised the HSBA since its foundation: here, entrepreneurship is not a single subject but part of the university’s very identity. Through close collaboration with Hamburg’s business community, small learning groups, entrepreneurial teaching methods and a consistent focus on practical application, the university develops individuals who set up businesses, drive innovation and take on responsibility.

Prof. Dr. Tim Goydke

Our aim has always been to educate people who shape the economy – not just manage it. The fact that an independent study by the Technical University of Munich now ranks HSBA among the most successful universities for entrepreneurship in the German-speaking world confirms that we are on the right track. We are particularly pleased that our graduates not only set up businesses, but also develop them successfully, create jobs and generate a sustainable economic impact. This is only possible thanks to our close partnership with Hamburg’s most innovative companies.

The Entrepreneurial Impact Study 2026 is regarded as one of the most comprehensive analyses of entrepreneurial activity at higher education institutions in the German-speaking world. The study is based on more than 51,000 start-ups founded between 2014 and 2024. The researchers categorised these start-ups according to the educational and professional backgrounds of their founders, assigning them to a total of 437 universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In addition to the number of start-ups, the analysis takes into account factors such as funding success, employment effects and other impact indicators.
