Professor Dr Insa Sjurts, President and Chairwoman of the Executive Board of HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration, was today re-elected Deputy Chairwoman by the members of the Commission on Concentration in the Media (KEK). She had previously been appointed as an expert by the heads of government of the federal states for a further term of office until 31 March 2027. The KEK is responsible for ensuring diversity of opinion in nationwide private television.
For Insa Sjurts, who has been a member of the KEK since 2002, this is already the fifth term of office. From 2004 to 2007 and from 2017 to 2022 she was deputy chairperson, and from 2007 to 2014 chairperson of the body. "I am very pleased to be able to take on the task of Vice-Chair of the KEK for another two and a half years. The enormous change in the media markets poses the question of securing diversity of opinion and the free formation of opinion anew; together we want to find viable and sustainable answers to this," Insa Sjurts comments on her re-election.
In addition to Insa Sjurts, the KEK also includes as experts the Chairperson Prof. Dr Georgios Gounalakis (Philipps University Marburg), Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Althammer (HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management), Prof. Dr. Ralf Müller-Terpitz (University of Mannheim) and the two new members Prof. Dr. Anne Paschke (TU Braunschweig) and Prof. Dr. Christian von Coelln (University of Cologne). Prof. Dr. Rupprecht Podszun (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf) and Dr. Simone Schelberg (lawyer) are newly appointed as substitute members. In addition, six representatives of the state media authorities as well as two further substitute members from this circle are members of the KEK.
The KEK was established in 1997. As a non-governmental, location-independent body, it is responsible for ensuring compliance with the legal provisions to safeguard diversity of opinion in nationwide private television. The assessment of the KEK is binding vis-à-vis the other bodies of the respective competent state media authority.
