Hamburg Fair Trade University Competition: HSBA Students Take Third Place

Under the motto ‘Hamburg! Act! Fair! – Business and science together for fair trade,’ students from various universities once again developed marketing or communication concepts or potential analyses for cooperation partners with the aim of strengthening fair trade in Hamburg and, this year, in the metropolitan region as well. The competition aims to motivate and activate people to #fairhandeln (trade fairly) for human rights and climate justice worldwide.

A team of HSBA students also took part in this year's competition: Together with Prof. Dr. Inga Schmidt-Ross and Prof. Dr. Dennis Ahrholdt, they developed a concept for the Hotel an der Marienkirche in Lübeck that aims to make the fair trade products already used there more visible, attract new target groups to the hotel and increase its visibility on booking platforms. Special thanks go to Lucia Stannius, Jette von Rönn, Alexander Böhning, Lisa Hinrichs and Helen Dierk, who presented their project to the jury and guests.

Senator Dr Melanie Leonhard, President of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Innovation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, was also present at the award ceremony on the HSBA campus. After a brief welcome by Prof. Dr Tim Goydke, she gave a welcoming speech. The individual teams then presented their projects, which were evaluated by a jury consisting of representatives from business, civil society, academia and the City of Hamburg.

We would like to thank Fair Trade City Hamburg and the Innovation Contact Point (IKS Hamburg), in particular Christine Prießner and Katharina Keienburg, for their commitment and organisation of the competition.

About the university competition

For eleven years, Fair Trade City Hamburg (FTS HH) and the Innovation Contact Point (IKS) have been jointly organising the Hamburg Fair Trade University Competition. The aim of the competition is to raise awareness of fair trade, sensitise students to the issue and strengthen cooperation between business and academia. The IKS Hamburg initiates the cooperation projects in advance. The work was evaluated by a ten-member jury with representatives from business, civil society, academia and the City of Hamburg. The patron of this year's university competition is Senator Dr Melanie Leonhard, President of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Innovation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
