Maritime Business School

MBS

Operating under the umbrella brand MBS (Maritime Business School), future activities of the HSBA in maritime and related areas shall be combined and further developed. With the MBS it is our mandate to support the economy by fostering highly skilled professionals and leaders as well as research endeavours to answer operational and location related questions. We would be delighted if you build up this project with us to facilitate a good start for the Maritime Business School.

It would be of great value if you share your ideas, suggestions or requirements.

The city of Hamburg has been noted as being a well-equipped and ideal location. With its harbour operations, shipping companies, classification societies and ship management operations, Hamburg is one of the most important navy and shipping locations in Germany. Moreover, a multitude of logistical organisations have elected Hamburg as an ideal location due to its connection to the harbour.

If one also considers the ship financing facilities, the insurance brokers and the specialist freelancers based in Hamburg, one can recognise that there is a great need for a qualified workforce and the development of innovative solutions to secure a competitive advantage for the organisation.

With the MBS we aim to meet these needs by providing:
- high-quality study programmes,
- qualified advanced study opportunities
- practical research opportunities.

The study programmes

The core product of the MBS will be the Bachelor study paths. For our school, the fundamental Bachelor qualification and the help of the economy, are the most important instruments to create excellent future professionals and leaders within the industry. To date, this has been achieved to the great satisfaction of our partner organisations: around 97% of our cooperatiing partners perceive the level of quality of the education provided by the HSBA to be either good or very good.

The Shipping & Ship Finance degree is a focal area of study but also in the Logistics degree much emphasis is placed on maritime and harbour-related knowledge. In the future, the Bachelor porogramme in Business Administration – the strongest of our courses at the HSBA – will also offer a greater extent of maritime themes as elective modules.

By cooperating with the HSBA, our cooperating organisations have the chance to secure the best graduates and to assist us in shaping these qualified individuals. By doing this, young people can be developed to become industry-competent, achievement-orientated and responsible, business-minded employees.

We believe that the maritime sector, acting as a pillar of support for the economy of Hamburg, must gain the best and the most qualified employees. Hence at this stage we appeal to you: consider cooperating with the HSBA, should you not already be working in collaboration with us.

The Maritime Business School strives to achieve more. In order to meet the requirements and needs for advanced study options in the maritime industry, we are currently developing ideas for a Master of Arts or MBA programme which will particularly benefit employees of shipping and ship financing houses, especially with regards to offering custom-fit management-orientated further study and advancement options.

To position the MBS as a competent player in this area over the long term, we are also already in discussion with international partners to establish collaborative doctorate programmes.

Advanced study opportunities

Beyond this we are also developing specialised advanced study offers for senior managers of the maritime economy. By doing this we have already secured the Department of Transport of the Emirate Abu Dhabi as our client. Thus, the HSBA can also position itself as an internationally competent player beyond Hamburg.

Series of events and information centre

We have now also launched a series of lectures that will create a framework in which foreign experts can present current topics of the shipping industry to students and interested organisations. Last week, for instance, Professor Psaraftis from Greece conducted a lecture on the subject of “Intermodal Transport“. In January, Ali Abdulrahim from the United Arab Emirates will give a lecture on the topic of “Islamic Financing“.

Primarily this will focus on how Hamburg-based organisations can acquire Arabic venture capital. You are invited to join this lecture!

For the year ahead we are already planning approximately 10 further events. In general, we would like to position the MBS as an information centre for the maritime economy of Hamburg.

In collaboration with the Commerzbibliothek we are busy acquiring a constituency of current literature related to _hipping and Ship Finance orientated themes. Also access to the most important databases such as for example IMO Vega or Shipping Intelligence Network (“SIN”) will be made available.

Applied research

At the core of applied research lies the will to analyse current problems and operationally relevant solutions, together with industry, in order to achieve competitive capabilities of the region and increase the economy. Alongside such activities, the area of R&D within the Maritime Business School will be dedicated to asking questions regarding the competitive ability of the shipping industry, the harbour and its upstate connections as well as the state of the maritime equipped economy.

We would be delighted if you, as an organisation, support us with these projects as this is the only way we can actually conduct industry-relevant research and achieve accurate results. Through our HSBA foundation, we support the research ideas of our professors.

Areas
:
- Studies of the competitive ability of the industry and region
- EU-financed research projects
- Research under assignment of an organisation

Should you have any queries or problems that could require the attention of our experts at HSBA, you are most welcome to contact us. We would be glad to assist!

The Team

At HSBA we can rely on a wide range of Know-How. For one, Prof. Schinas is an expert regarding all questions related to management of shipping companies, regulating shipping and also harbour-related shipping issues. Amongst other things, he is employed as an expert for the IMO and is a peer for the European Union research projects in the area of maritime research.

Along with our Professor of Shipping and Ship Finance, Mr. Schinas, a great collection of competent experts are gathered at the HSBA. Professor Küster runs an issuing house and conducts research in the area Ship Finance.
Professor Hartmann, head of the Logistics Management stream has experience in working for a harbour logistics company and is now dedicated to collaborating with organisations on a practical level of the organisation’s logistic chains. Professor Zaeh completes the team. Next to his placement as a Professor at HSBA, he is also on the board of a shipping enterprise. Later you will have the opportunity to meet Professor Schinas and our other experts.
