Shipping Economics & Finance Masterclass
The Shipping Economics and Finance Masterclass is a new intensive short course from 16 to 18 May 2016 in Singapore that has been created to meet the growing needs of the ship management, finance, banking, accounting and legal communities in Singapore and Asia as shipping continues to ‘move East’.
Course content will be based on materials from HSBA’s prestigious Shipping MBA programme as well as the new Springer publication, HSBA Ship Finance Handbook.
The course, led by Prof Dr-Eng. Orestis Schinas, will commence with a review of shipping market fundamentals along with the impact of shipping cycles and ‘black swan’ events. Prof Schinas will then move on to examine the financing of ships, shipping loans and the rationale of debt, including a legal analysis together with essential calculations and risk assessment methodologies.
The next section of the course will take on the concept and utility of equity financing as well as the acquisition of ship tonnage through new-builds and second hand purchases. The final part of the course will analyse the concept of ship leasing, as a financing alternative, followed by an in depth session on risk management in shipping.
The course will end with a full half day being devoted to participant group analysis of several realistic ship finance scenarios, designed to test learning and motivate ingenuity. Group presentations will then be subjected to peer review and challenge, under the watchful guidance of Prof Schinas who will assist in assessing the validity of the solutions presented.
