Dr. Garrett ist China-Experte und hat zahlreiche Publikationen zu Fragen der Zusammenarbeit zwischen China und den USA herausgebracht.

Dr. Banning Garrett is Director of the Asia Programs at the Atlantic Council, a position he also held from 2003-2007.
From February 2008 to February 2009 he was Director of the Initiative for U.S.-China Cooperation on Energy and Climate for the Center for U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society, during which time he helped draft and supervised production of the Asia Society’s highly influential January 2009 report Common Challenge, Collaborative Response: A Roadmap for US-China Cooperation on Energy and Climate Change. Prior to that, he was Executive Director of the Institute for Sino-American International Dialogue at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado from January 2007 to February 2008.
Before first joining the Council, Dr. Garrett was a consultant to the Department of Defense and other agencies of the U.S. government as well as to private industry for more than 20 years. He was a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, 1988-2003.
Dr. Garrett has written extensively on a wide range of issues, including: U.S. strategy toward China; U.S.-China relations; Chinese foreign policy and views of the strategic environment; globalization and its strategic impact; U.S. defense policy and Asian security; and arms control. He has published numerous articles for many journals and news media outlets, has contributed to several edited volumes on Asian affairs and has been frequently interviewed by international media. Dr. Garrett has made more than 50 visits to China since 1981 for dialogue with Chinese officials and experts. He received a B.A. from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from Brandeis University.
